Description
This is a Navajo spindle I was gifted. I like to have decorations on my spindles (for quick-look spin direction reference) and my husband suggested a native theme, due to the type of spindle. What else to use then, than the spider?
She adorns the "underneath", curved, face of the whorl, while the star is the design I will see when spinning.
I engraved the design with a dremmel, then painted in the lines with black acrylic, just to make sure it will last for years of use. The whorl wasn't attached well, so I drilled a hole in the shaft, and installed a wooden brace that should hold the whorl in place, and epoxied the whole thing together. After it dried, I sealed the whole thing with beeswax furniture polish.
Diameter of the whorl: 6in
Length of spindle: 26in
Weight: 4.75oz.
